19 Oct Giving Back to the Regent Park School of Music

Saturday Night Superstars believes in giving back to the community, and a community not far from some of our homes is the Regent Park neighbourhood of Toronto.

The Regent Park School of Music (RPSM) is a non-profit community music school that exists to give as many kids as possible a music education, by removing the financial obstacle. Their goal in 2015 is to give the gift of music to over 1,750 students across a number of communities in Toronto.

RPSM ROCKSTAR MasterclassSaturday Night Superstars is proud to have had the opportunity to mentor a select group of senior students in the first annual program that they have called ROCKSTAR Masterclass. Modelled after a typical masterclass experience, this performance/workshop with students allows them to see the ins and outs of a working professional band while experiencing the synergy themselves. Each student has the chance to perform a rehearsed song with the band, receive a professional critique, then perform it again with tips and tricks in hand.

The concept and program was created by the band’s lead singer, Matt Humphreys, who holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto. Matt takes the role of music mentor seriously. ” I always thought that it would be great to bring some contemporary music into a classical music school to give students a chance to get up on stage and be passionate and express themselves,” says Matt, “That’s sometimes difficult when you’ve only been rehearsing with a accompanist on piano or guitar.”

Back for it’s 2nd year in the 2015/2016 school year, ROCKSTAR Masterclass will welcome 10 senior students to the ‘stage’ to learn a little bit about being a Superstar.
